The Difference Between Tadārus and Tadabbur
by Dr. Farid al-Ansari
1) What tadārus really is
Dr. Farid describes tadārus as a learning process that is mainly mental and text-focused. It happens “inside” the Qur’anic text, and it deals with the Qur’an’s language, style, meanings, wisdoms, and indications.
So, tadārus is a learning engagement with the text and its meanings.
2) What tadabbur really is
He shifts from mind to heart. Tadabbur is a purely heart-based, spiritual tasting and inner experience.
It’s not just understanding information. It’s letting the meaning go deep into you.
3) Where tadabbur happens
Dr. Farid makes a strong point that tadabbur is not something that mainly happens “on the text.” It happens inside the person. It’s an emotional and inner movement that goes beyond technical analysis.
4) How tadārus connects to tadabbur
For Dr. Farid, tadabbur does not start from nothing. It receives meanings and wisdoms from tadārus, then carries them into the depths of the soul, and also out into real life and society.
So tadabbur becomes a kind of spiritual training, not just academic study.
5) Tadabbur as diagnosis and healing
He even describes tadabbur as diagnosing spiritual and social diseases, then looking at the Qur’an’s “treatment prescriptions,” until a person develops Qur’anic character and rises through its light.
6) The Qur’anic command to tadabbur
He says the real work of tadabbur is in the soul and the community, not the text by itself, even if the text is what you start with. And the biggest barrier is a “locked heart.”
7) Tadabbur leads to tafakkur and then “inner sight”
He links tadabbur with tafakkur (deep reflection), especially when looking at Allah’s creation. Tadabbur of the Qur’an pushes you toward tafakkur of the universe.
And the outcome is “seeing” with clarity and insight, not just knowing.
